Howard University is a prestigious, research-oriented, predominantly African-American university. Its mission is to educate and empower students to advance social justice. maintain human freedom and raise the standard of living for everyone on the planet.
The 256-acre campus is in northwest Washington, D.C., often referred to as “The Mecca”. It is home to 19 varsity athletic teams and ten fraternities and sororities.
Blue and Red
Founded in 1867, Howard University is one of the top-tier historically black colleges. And universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Named for Civil War general Oliver Otis Howard. Who helped establish the school? It is privately controlled but financially supported in large part by the U.S. government.
The university has volunteered and taken an active role in social justice issues in the past. Its motto is Veritas et Utilitas—Truth and Service.
In addition, the school’s students and alumni serve in several volunteer capacities, including the Peace Corps. They are also involved in organizing a variety of events. Such as a day of service and a campus-wide effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. And Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
The official academic colors of Howard University are indigo blue and white. The Intercollegiate Office of Academic Costume released academic hood listings in 1927. 1948 and 1972 describe a hood lined in azure blue with a white chevron.
Green and White

During the 1920s and 1930s, Howard gathered a brilliant faculty. That aimed to explore new directions for black America. This group included such leading scholars as political scientist Ralph Bunche. English professor Sterling Brown, sociologist E. Franklin Frazier, and economist Abram Harris, Jr.
The school became a symbol of the racial aspirations of black people. And its graduates responded to discrimination in society by working for a more equitable world. It was among the first colleges to offer courses on African-American history. and it is still one of the foremost centers for studying disadvantaged people in the world.

Gold and White
Howard University is one of the most recognizable Black universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Its graduates have gone on to make significant contributions in a variety of fields. Including the late actor Chadwick Boseman and author Ta-Nehisi Coates.
The campus of this historic university is located on a hilltop in Washington, DC. It’s just two miles from the Capitol. And students often take advantage of this proximity to undertake internships. And shape national and global policy.
It also boasts a wide range of academics. Undergraduates can earn bachelors. master’s, and doctoral degrees in arts and sciences, business, education, and engineering.
The college also features several fraternities and sororities. including five of the so-called “Divine Nine” (nine historically Black Greek letter organizations). It is home to ten different colleges of arts and sciences and offers an array of majors.
